20 years ago, a new villain was launched in Marathi Cinema. A puppet called Tatya Vinchu created by master puppeteer Ramdas Padhya made his debut on the big screen and a new villain came on the block in Mahesh Kothare’s Zapatlela which created a storm in Marathi Cinema and sent shivers down the spine of the audience.
20 years hence, Tatya Vinchu is making a comeback in a bigger and better avatar in Zapatlela 2 in 3D format.
Releasing tomorrow across cinemas in Maharashtra, Zapatlela 2 is the first Marathi film to be shot in 3D. This is also the first official sequel to a Marathi film for which due credit goes to the film’s actor/director Mahesh Kothare who’s been entertaining the Marathi audience with good quality cinema over the last couple of decades.
His pairing with his long time buddy, late actor Laxmikant Berde has been instrumental in churning out hits after hits in his two decade long career till Laxmikant’s untimely demise a few years ago.
Another first for this film is the entry of mega production house Viacom 18 into regional films with Zapatlela 2. This film stars Mahesh Kothare’s son Adinath Kothare (who plays the late Laxmikant Berde’s son in the film), Sonali Kulkarni and Sai Tanhankar.
The story is thus that the ghost of Tatya Vinchu comes back to life and creates havoc in Adinath’s life.
Besides big names like Viacom 18, even Prime Focus, the leader in animation and special effects have been part of the film’s production. The marketing and distribution of the film has been handled by internationally acclaimed Hollywood studio, Fox Star Studios.
With such big names involved with a regional film, Zapatlela 2 will surely be a film to watch out for. Here’s taking Marathi Cinema one notch higher.
