Last week Actor/Director/Producer Farhan Akhtar launched M.A.R.D. – Men Against Rape and Discrimination, a social awareness campaign to protect women.
Launched with full blast through his tweeter account, Farhan’s initiative against gender inequality and rape garnered lot of support not just from the common man but from celebrities as well. His Bollywood counterparts like Shabana Azmi, Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Riteish Deshmukh and host of others have passionately started supporting the cause through the social media.
“If you are a man who respects women… her rights, her dignity, her independence, her mind, her body, her life… you are a #MARD”, tweeted Farhan.
This social awareness campaign has come on the heels of Amitabh Bachchan’s Breakthrough initiative – ‘One Million Men, One Million Promises’. Breakthrough is a domestic violence awareness campaign aimed at men.
With the Delhi ‘Nirbhaya’ rape case still fresh on the minds of people and with the number of crime against women on the rise, both Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar’s helping hand will do a lot of good to curbing crime against women as the media and the common people tend to follow celebrities from close quarters.
